By GNA

Kasoa (C/R) April 21, GNA- The member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya, Mr Opaye Abbey has urged assembly members in the area to intensify the education on the benefits of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Speaking during an interaction with members of the Awutu-Afutu-Senya District Assembly at Kasoa on Wednesday, he said the NHIS had been initiated by the Government to save Ghanaians from paying exorbitant medical bills.

Touching on the recent 50 per cent hike in the price of petroleum products, Mr. Abbey said it was meant to wean the country from the over its over dependence on donor support.

Mr Abbey said the increase would therefore enable the Government to generate enough revenue for the provision of hospitals, electricity, water, roads and other social needs of the people. He said the price of crude oil on the World market continued to increase and therefore appealed to Ghanaians to bear with the situation. Mr Abbey advised drivers operating in the area not to take advantage of the fuel price to charge exorbitant fares.

He asked the members to improve on the revenue base of the Assembly by advising the people on the need to pay their basic rates promptly. Mr Abbey also asked the assembly members to give serious attention to poor sanitation problems in their respective electoral areas.
