Asokore-Mampong (Ash), Mar 06, GNA - SOS Children's Villages, Ghana, has taken steps to assist strengthen the management of public schools in the in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality for strong academic performance.

This involves building the capacity members of the school management committees (SMCs) and the parent-teacher associations (PTAs) through training.

A total of 25 schools have so far benefited and it is part of a four-year project - Quality Education Now (QEN), launched to raise the quality of education.

Mr. Stephenson Avotri, the Head teacher of Kumasi SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, said effective supervision and discipline were vital for the achievement of academic excellence.

It was important to make sure the teachers and pupils made good use of the contact hours.

He also spoke of the need for the communities to show ownership of the schools and help to create academically-friendly environment.

Mr. Avotri described as worrying the situation where some of the schools had been struggling with adequate space for effective teaching and learning and said that should be tackled.

He appealed to the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to make education their topmost priority.

He underlined the determination of the SOS Villages to partner the SMCs and PTA's to improve students' performance.
