Sunyanii, Mar. 01, GNA - Dr Osei Kuffour Afreh, the Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Director, Public Health, on Tuesday raised public alarm on the possibility of cholera outbreak in the Region.

This is partly due to the water crisis that has hit parts of the Region.

Dr Afreh told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani that with the onset of the rains there was the possibility that most river bodies, streams, wells and boreholes could be contaminated.

He entreated people who relied and fetch water from these sources to ensure that they boiled the water well before using it.

Dr Afreh observed that though the Regional Health Directorate had put in place measures to control any unforeseen contingency, there was the need for the general public to also promote personal and environmental cleanliness.

Residents in the Sunyani Municipality and parts of Brong-Ahafo are going through severe water crisis.

For months now, residents mostly relied on car washing bays, crossing the roads frequently for water supply.

Almost all the standpipes and water connections into various households and public places are not running.

Some of the worst affected areas are Sunyani, Nsoatre, Abesim, Tanoso, Yamfo, Susuanso, Techire among others.

Engineer Charles Brobbey, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited, told the GNA that the Tano River, the major source of water had almost dried up.

This unpleasant situation, he said had compelled his outfit to reduce its operations by half.

Eng Brobbey said illegal mining activities in the Tano River were other factors which had dried the river.
