Three senior high school leavers who allegedly attempted to snatch a taxi from its owner after hiring his services at Asofan, near Ofankor in Accra, have been arrested by the police.

The suspects – Ernest Frimpong, 18; Edward Adjei, 18 and Ussif Mnai, 18 – were arrested at a snap check point at dawn yesterday.

A dagger, cutlass and knife concealed in a bag, were reportedly retrieved from the suspects when a search was conducted on them by the police.

They were immediately arrested and brought to the police station together with the taxi driver for investigation to be conducted.

Superintendent Ussif Tanko, the Mile 7 District Police Commander who confirmed the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, said the suspects hired the services of the taxi driver of a Daewoo Matis taxi with registration number GG 4352-15 from the Ofankor Barrier to Asofan.

The police officer said on reaching the check point, police personnel conducted a search on them and discovered the offensive weapons.

Upon interrogation, the suspects claimed ownership of the items but refused to tell the police what they were using them for.

Superintendent Tanko disclosed that investigation conducted by the police revealed that the taxi driver was unaware that the suspects he had picked were armed.

The commander posited that the suspects were either going for a robbery operation or were going to attack the driver.

They were still in police custody assisting in investigations as at press time last night.
