General News New IGP should ensure closure to pending cases of police brutality - Ken Attafuah
JAN 26, 2017 LISTEN

Criminologist, Professor Ken Attafuah has urged the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) to focus on bringing closure to pending cases of alleged police brutality against civilians.

He said it was unfortunate that alleged brutalities suffered by civilians at the hands of the police often do not move beyond the announcement of them being investigated.

Speaking to Mamavi Owusu-Aboagye on the AM Show on MultiTV Channel JOY NEWS, the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Central University College said COP David Asante Appeatu should invigorate public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

COP David Asante Appeatu becomes the 21st IGP since the first appointed in 1966.

The 'French-speaking' IGP is a trained forensic scientist who has worked as the Director of the Specialised Crime and Analysis (SCA) Unit at INTERPOL in Lyon, France.

He is a former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department and team leader in investigations into the mass murder of more than 50 people, mostly West African nationals, in The Gambia.

He replaced John Kudalor who is set to begin his retirement after 14 months as IGP.

Advising how to garner more public support and trust, Mr Attafuah said IGP Appeatu should quickly release all completed reports of police shooting of civilians and face the bullet.

"Grab the bull by the horns and show leadership in reducing this penchant in society where police shoot civilians and other police officers and nothing happens.

"We get assurances that the police is going to deal with it, they would release a report...I have personally followed 13 or such cases and I know others that Joy FM has been following with no response.

He said this is an important matter that needs to be dealt with decisively by the police to invigorate public confidence in the organisation.
