Abidjan (AFP) - Ivory Coast's main port of Abidjan, one of Africa's biggest, was shut down Wednesday when angry security forces began firing into the air amid protests by mutinous troops, port staff said.

"Gendarmes (paramilitary police) started firing into the air at the fishing port at around 10:00 am (GMT). Then they chased us away. Everyone left. Everything's closed," a port employee told AFP, asking not to be identified. Other staff confirmed the report.

The main port in the world's top cocoa producer remained closed early afternoon.
