Tepa (Ash), March 22, GNA - A team of staff of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at Kwadaso have embarked on public education to sensitise the people in the Ahafo-Ano North District on the importance of paying taxes.

Speaking to a group of hawkers, hairdressers, carpenters, welders and chop bar operators at Tepa on Wednesday, Mr Mustapha Ali Iddrisu, the leader of the team explained to them to voluntarily pay their taxes to enable the government and the District Assembly to undertake development projects and provide goods and services in the country.

He said even though the IRS have, for sometime now embarked on public education on Television, FM Stations and door to door campaigns on taxes, there are some people who are refusing to understand the need for them to pay taxes on their income and describe such people at "difficult tax payers".

He explained that under a new tax law, fitters, welders, carpenters and people who trade in 40 feet containers are to obtain 250,000 tax stamp on quarterly basis, while those who trade in 15 to 20 feet containers pay 150,000 quarterly for tax stamp.

He mentioned tailors, hairdressers, chop bar and saloon operators as people who are expected to obtain quarterly stickers, explaining that it is an offence for anyone to refuse to pay tax on his her business.

Mr Iddrisu, assured the people that the IRS would soon open a collection centre at Tepa to make it easier for them to obtain their stickers periodically.
