Tema, March 20, GNA -- The Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Vida Drapson, has reiterated that the Ghana Education Service will not tolerate parents who take school authorities to court because their children have been disciplined.

She said the GES, in ensuring that all that it takes the child to learn is provided, will also not condone acts of indiscipline in schools, stressing that students who misconduct themselves will be sanctioned.

She was delivering a speech at the weekend at the 10th Anniversary celebration and first Speech and Prize Giving Day of the Tema Presbyterian Secondary School, in Tema under the theme: "Pursuing Academic Excellence with Discipline".

She noted with concern the formation of some groups like Al-Quaeda, Taliban, Israel and the practice of occultism in the country's second cycle schools, which she said, has lured some students into drug taking and some becoming violent.

The Regional Director stated that excellence and discipline have some of the attributes of the Presbyterian training and challenged the staff and students of the school to go back to the Presbyterian way of training to make sure to produce men and women who are disciplined and willing to pursue academic excellence.

She also stressed the need for parents to support school authorities to mould the students and added that Guidance and Counselling in schools must also be strengthened to help curb acts of indiscipline amongst those who are coming up. In his welcome address the Headmaster of the school, Mr. King Secorm, said the school, which started in January, 1994, with 28 students now has a student population of 614, made up of 266 males and 348 females.

It currently has 29 teaching staff and seven non-teaching staff, which, he said, was inadequate and hoped the Government will soon lift the ban placed on recruitment of non-teaching staff to enable it to have enough of them.

He mentioned lack of office and residential accommodation, school bus, and library books as some of the problems facing the school and made a passionate appeal to the Government and especially the Tema Municipal Assembly to come to their aid and support them.

Awards were presented to personalities who have contributed to the development of the school as well as students who excelled in their studies.
