OCT 26, 2016 LISTEN

President John Mahama has likened his main contender in the presidential race, Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to a spectator who is only good at criticizing but lacks the competence to effect any positive change.

The NPP and its flagbearer have consistently questioned the competency of the President Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s management of issues like the economy, power sector and health insurance.

But addressing party supporters during mini rally at Kade in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, President Mahama charged the electorate not to be swayed by cheap words being passed as criticism.

Using a sports analogy to rubbish the NPP’s criticism, he said, “often times when you listen to spectators, you will be under the impression they are better than the players themselves. It is easier said than done.”

“When you go to the stadium, you might think the spectators are better than Andre Ayew or Asamoah Gyan because when you listen to their commentary, they make comments like: I would have scored that goal, I will make a better player,” he added.

President Mahama thus urged resilience on the part of his NDC and its supporters saying, “we should be focused and must continue to do the work that the people of Ghana voted us to in to do.”

‘Stop registering your members on NHIS if it has collapsed’

Earlier, President Mahama questioned why the NPP would register members on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) given their claims it has collapsed under his government.

“Recently the NPP said the NHIS has collapsed but if you claim NHIS has collapsed why is the NPP registering its supporters onto the scheme? If it has collapsed then what is the benefit of the card? Why are you paying for the NHIS cards for our people? If it has collapsed, then stop registering your people. What is happening is that the NHIS has expanded tremendously,” Mahama said.
