OMA champions Futurestars Schools Project in Ghana

Accra, Sept. 20, GNA - OMA, a leading firm in the maritime sector would organise its third youth festival at the Tema Sports Stadium on Saturday, September 24, under its Future Stars Schools Project.

The project, a collaboration between OMA Ghana, Ipswich Town Football Academy and Yinson Holdings Berhad is aimed at promoting education and instilling core values through the game of football.

It was launched on February 28, 2015, with the motto: 'Encouraging Values & Inspiring Children.'

The project stakeholders are the Ghana Education Service (GES) and National Sports Authority (NSA).

'We are thrilled to partner with Ipswich Town Football Academy and Yinson Holdings Berhad and collaborate with the GES and NSA in this life changing project, which has the potential to impact the entire community', says MD of OMA Ghana, Garry Miller.

'We are delighted with the response to the project so far and look forward to a great event,' he said in a statement issued in Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency.

In line with the mission, a delegation from OMA including Titus Bramble - former EPL Player, Simon Milton - Director of Academy Sales at Ipswich Town FC and the MD of OMA Group would arrive in the country on Tuesday, September 20.

The project being undertaken with additional funding from Yinson, making the idea a reality has evolved into a fantastic programme working with five schools in Tema, potentially influencing 2500 children.

The statement said the response from the children and staff involved has been fantastic.

OMA Ghana has employed two coaches full time who visit each school every week to deliver football coaching and work with the schools' PE teachers to help them deliver a full range of sports activities for boys and girls.

The children are picked after a talent hunt at the 'after school development centre' at the Tema Sports Stadium.

The five public schools in Tema selected as model schools for the project are: Community 7 Primary School, Community 8 Primary School, Twedease Primary School, Republic Road Primary School and Batsonaa Primary School.

Currently the team is made up of 36 boys who are part of the Development Centre receive coaching, hygiene and life tips from the coaches 4 days in a week.

To move the project to the next level, about four months ago a netball programme was introduced for all girls in the five model schools and so far 28 of them have been invited to play the game.

'The academic performance of each student is also monitored by the company where we assist financially any student who needs help for extra tuition,' the statement said.

Together with Yinson Productions Ghana, phase one of renovations at the five schools is completed, with phase two soon to begin.

A committee made up of Emmanuel Okyne-Tetteh from OMA Ghana who is leading the project, the British High Commission in Accra, Mr Miller and Mr Milton, are supporting the coaches and supplying all the kit, equipment and backup they need.

Mr Miller is Honorary Life Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (West Africa Branch), which facilitates and encourages local and global employers to invest in training to raise standards across West Africa.

OMA group is affiliated to indigenous companies in Ghana, Togo, Benin and Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal, with support from a European sales and marketing office.
