Traders appeal for a police post at Mankessim market

By GNA

Mankessim (C/R), Feb. 16, GNA - Traders of Mankessim market have appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to provide a police post in the market area to ensure security for their patrons and their wares. Mr Kwesi Baffoe, a spokesman for the traders, told the Ghana News Agency that patronage of the market, which used to be one of the leading facilities in the country, was dwindling due to harassment by robbers. "Robbers have found the market as a haven and are terrorising the traders especially those who could not get vehicles back home in time," he said.

Mr Baffoe who is an executive member of the local branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), said if immediate steps were not taken to check the activities of the robbers, investments being made by the district assembly to improve facilities in the market would be a waste.

He said one of the robbers was killed recently and during his burial, his colleagues went on rampage in the market looting people's wares until the police arrived from Saltpond and Cape Coast to save the situation.
