Good governance, key to Ghana's development - Nasagri

Tamale, Feb. 13, GNA - Mr. Issa Nasagri, Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civil Education (NCCE), has observed that good governance was the key to Ghana's development and prosperity. He noted that the socio economic development that the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) sought to achieve would be difficult without democracy and good governance.

Mr. Nasagri made the observation during the Northern Regional "APRM Week" celebration in Tamale on Monday

The APRM is a mutually agreed instrument voluntarily acceded to by the member states of the African Union (AU) as an African self-monitoring mechanism.

It seeks to encourage participating states, to ensure that their policies and practices conform to the agreed political, economic and corporate governance values, codes and standards. This is to ensure that the mutually agreed objectives in socio-economic development contained in the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) are achieved.

The celebration of the Week, which is on the theme: "towards Ghana's growth and prosperity through good governance" would include radio discussions in local languages, lectures at school and public forums to explain what the APRM is and how it would ensure Ghana's growth and prosperity.

Mr. Nasagri said with good political approach and policies by the government and support from development partners, the poverty levels among the people would be reduced thus enhancing the economic gains of the country.

He said identifying and providing the basic needs of the people needed a good political will, mentioning the President's Special Initiatives (PSI) as one of such areas, which if properly harnessed would bring prosperity to the people, especially those in Northern Ghana.

He appealed to the country's development partners to support her for practicing democracy and good political governance and encourage her to achieve economic emancipation.
