Parliament rejects motion to investigate President

Accra, Sept. 1, GNA - Mr Edward Doe Adjaho Speaker of Parliament, on Thursday did not admit issues raised in the motion for the recall of Parliament and adjourned the house sine die.

The issues on the motion for the recall presented to the Speaker by the Minority Leader on behalf of the minority caucus was to investigate issues on the receipt of a Ford Expedition vehicle as gift by President John Dramani Mahama from a Burkina Faso Contractor and other related matters.

The House began sitting rather late at 11:55 am and sat for less than 10 minutes after prayers.

The Speaker, quoting constitutional provision and the standing orders of Parliament said the matter was before the Commission on Human Right and Administrative Justice.

In his address to the House, the Speaker said he was forced to reject the motion because CHRAJ is the only mandated body to investigate matters of conflict of interest.

'As a Speaker I am firmly convinced CHRAJ is the only mandated body to probe this case," he said.

Mr Doe Adjaho said the Supreme Court has made a number of pronouncements regarding the exclusive jurisdiction in terms of Chapter 24 of the 1992 Constitution dealing with the code of conducts of public officers, including the President.

The Speaker of Parliament, recalled members of the House based on the minority's petition.
