Munich, ACCRA, Sept 1, (dpa/GNA) - Dozens of cluster bombs are still being dropped on Syria and Yemen during the conflicts there, an arms monitoring organization said Thursday.
Between the end of September 2015 and the middle of July this year, the Cluster Munition Monitor group said there were 76 attacks using cluster bombs in Syria.
In the previous four years there were 360 reported bombardments using cluster munitions, said the group in its annual report. The actual number was probably a lot higher.
"Cluster munition attacks in Syria have increased since Russia began its joint military operation with Syrian government forces at the end of September 2015," the group said.
In Yemen, where a Saudi Arabia-led coalition is fighting a war against Houthi rebels, the group counted 19 attacks using cluster bombs between April 2015 and February this year.
Saudi Arabia has denied the use of cluster bombs, which split in mid-air into many explosive bomblets and scatter over a large area.
Some 97 per cent of the victims of cluster bombs in 2015 were civilians, the report said. People are often hurt or killed when they touch unexploded bomblets lying on the ground.
About 100 states have signed a 2008 convention banning the munitions.
