Corporate Ghana must support breast cancer campaign – Womens Group

Leadership of the women's fellowship of the Wenchi diocese of the Methodist Church in the Brong Ahafo region has appealed to corporate institutions and multi-nationals to financially assist in the campaign against breast cancer.

The President of the Badu women's fellowship of the church, Margaret Ankamah Mensah bemoaned the increasing incidence of the disease amidst financial and logistical constraints.

Lack of resources, she said, constraints the efforts of “NGOs involved in creating awareness, and clinically screening women, in a bid to contain the disease in the long term.”

She appealed to multinationals and corporate entities to financially support breast cancer conscious NGOs in order to deepen and sustain the free screening and awareness creation programs.

Still at Badu, the President of Breast Care International (BCI), Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, led a team to clinically screen over 750 women of the diocese.

Dr. Wiafe advised the women not to keep mobile phones and money in braziers since it could cause unwanted changes in the breast tissues, pointing out that though the cause of breast cancer is not known, risk factors, predisposing women to the condition include genetics, poor dietary, and alcohol intake, habits, women should refrain from.

She associated herself with the call, and commended individuals and corporate instituions who have immensely supported the breast cancer awareness creation programs over the years.

She lamented the increase in hypertension, diabetes and non-communicable diseases among Ghanaians, and explained that the rise in statistics has necessitated the inclusion of those conditions in all awareness creation programs, using the BCI platform.

Dr. Wiafe encouraged the women to go for periodic check ups saying “early detection and prompt action, is equal to prevention.”

The President of the women's fellowship, Margaret Ankama Mensah, commended BCI and appealed to corporate Ghana, and well-resourced individuals to support the NGO financially to make the mission statement of significantly reducing the incidence of breast cancer in Ghana, a reality.
