Mpasatia (Ash), Feb 4, GNA - An irate mob on Wednesday vandalised a police vehicle belonging to the Nyinahin police at Mpasatia near Nkawie for killing a 19-year-old housewife, Abena Kwaa.

Two others, Kwaku Gabriel Ampofo, a 21-year-old electrician and Abena Serwaa who were also knocked down by the vehicle, were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

Two out of the three police personnel who were on the vehicle were assaulted by the mob, while the driver managed to escape with the help of some friends who provided him with civilian clothes.

According to Mr Kwaku Opare-Addo, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, the policemen were on their usual night patrols on the Abuakwa-Nkawie-Nyinahin trunk road when they saw a taxi cab moving at top speed at about 2100 hours.

He said when the police stopped him, the driver refused to stop for inspection and drove away and so the police chased him to the Mpasatia Junction where the police driver lost control of the vehicle after negotiating the curve to the township and so it skidded off the road and knocked down the three people killing Abena Kwaa instantly. Mr Opare-Addo said this angered the people who pounced on the police and meted out instant justice to them, while the vehicle was damaged beyond repairs.

The Fire Service Tender stationed at Nkawie, which was rushed to the scene on hearing of the accident had its windscreen damaged by the angry crowd.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Opare-Addo has commended Mr George Amankwatia, assemblyman for Mpasatia and the unit committee members for saving the three policemen from being lynched. The Atwima District Security Committee (DISEC) has in the meantime, expressed its condolences to the bereaved family.
