Accra, Feb. 3, GNA - Mr Gordon Wetherell, British High Commissioner on Thursday commissioned a Teacher's Resource Centre for the Ghana Education Service at Nkwanta in the Volta Region at a cost of 170 million cedis which was part of Britain's Small Grants Scheme. A statement the Commission issued in Accra said the centre is to address the problem of an inadequate supply of qualified teaching staff, poor attendance of students, high drop-out rates, especially among teenage girls, and low educational standards in the area.

It said the Nkwanta District was a deprived area of the Volta Region where schools were faced with problems and that the teacher's resource centre was one component of a comprehensive programme aimed at supporting the development of new teaching techniques within schools and the introduction of creative learning to children to raise standards of achievement.

It also involves providing books and teaching materials to about 42 schools within the Nkwanta District and would facilitate the spread of the teacher-training model to rural areas in the district.
