Woman jailed 30 months for stealing 1.7 million cedis

Cape Coast, Jan. 24, GNA - Doris Akosua Adampa, 23, unemployed, was on Monday sentenced to 30 months imprisonment by a circuit court at Cape Coast, for stealing 1.7 million cedis belonging to one Madam Afua Bih. Adampa, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was convicted on her own plea.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo, told the court presided over by Mr Mustapha Logoh, that Madam Bih was trader who lived at Old Hospital area, while the accused was unemployed and resided at Duakor, near the University of Cape Coast.

He said on January 14 this year, at about 18.30 hours, whiles madam Bih was preparing to leave the market for home, she kept her day's sales of 1.7 million cedis in hand bag and left it on a table on which she sells and the accused managed to pick the bag from the table without her knowledge.

The prosecution said when Adampa picked the bag one Ama saw her but before she could say jack, Adampa disappeared and was not seen again until January 21, when one Paa Kweku saw her in town and arrested and sent her to Madam Bih who in turn sent her to the police station. Inspector Amonoo said during interrogation Adampa admitted stealing the money but said somebody also tricked and collected the money from her.
