Court fines drivers for overloading

Kumasi, Jan 18, GNA - A Kumasi Circuit Court on Thursday fined two drivers and a motor rider a total of 12 million cedis for overloading and failing to produce their driving licenses while the rider carried a pillion without a crash helmet.

Stephen Reynolds, Abubakar Issah, the drivers and Ibrahim Said, motor rider, who pleaded guilty.

The drivers would go to prison for two years and rider 18 months in default.

Reynolds and Issah were fined five million cedis each for overloading and failing to produce their licenses whilst Said was fined two million cedis for failing to produce his license and carrying a pillion rider without a crash helmet.

Police Inspector Nana Amofah told the Court presided over by Mr Essel Mensah that on January 11, this year, Reynolds and Issah, timber truck drivers exceeded their load capacity of timber logs when their vehicles were weighed at the Ghana Highway Authority weighing point at Tanoso.

He said the drivers had exceeded the 10 tons load by five tons and when they were asked to produce their driving licenses, they failed to do so.

Inspector Amofah said Said who was riding a motorbike with a pillion rider who had no crash helmet could also not produce his license when the Police stopped him.
