Accra, Jan. 6, GNA - Mr. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports on Thursday commended the United States (US) Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) for their immense contribution towards the country's educational sector.
Mr Baah-Wiredu made this statement when he opened the 8th Annual Art exhibition organised by Peace Corps Ghana in collaboration with the National Museums in Accra.
The exhibition, which is under theme: "Art is Language" would run for the next three weeks at the National Museum.
It would also showcase the works by students of PCV teaching visual arts in some secondary and schools for the deaf in the country. The Minister said the introduction of PCV to Ghana in 1961 by the country's first President has continued to promote better understanding between people of the two nations.
He said the over 130 volunteers in Ghana were providing assistance in a variety of sectors including water and sanitation, education, environment and small enterprise development.
Mr Baah-Wiredu also expressed the hope that Ghanaians would emulate the examples of the volunteers in order to move the country's socio-economic development forward.
Mr. Jerry Lanier, Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy said Ghana is the only country where PCV are engaged in the teaching of art. He said the visual art volunteers teach their students art and craft making as well as the appreciation of creative indigenous work of art.
He said the popularity of Ghanaian arts around the world confirms the profound impact applied arts can have and how effective they could be in telling Ghana's story to the rest of the world.
