13-member road safety committee inaugurated in Ketu District

Denu, Jan. 5, GNA - A 13-member Road Safety Committee, was inaugurated at Denu in the Ketu District on Tuesday, to check the high rate of road accidents in the District, which accounts for about 50 per cent of road fatalities in the Volta Region, yearly.

The members were drawn from the Ghana Private Roads Transport Unit, the District Assembly, Ghana National Fire Service, the Police Service, traditional rulers, the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Non- Formal Education Division of the Ghana Education Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation.

Mr. Elvis Gbesemete, Regional National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) Coordinator, who inaugurated the Committee, listed the Timber Market-Makavo Junction, Avoeme, Akame, Nogokpo, St. Paul's Secondary School, Wuduaba and Penyi as the accident-prone areas that demanded the attention of members.

He said the NRSC was building road safety committee offices in every district.

Mr. Gbesemete said the NRSC was exploring ways to commit the district assemblies to sponsor road safety activities in their localities.

He said about 1,000 teacher trainees have been exposed to the rudiments of road safety management to disseminate the information to their students.

Mr. Linus Coffie, District Chief Executive, pledged the commitment of the District Assembly to support the activities of the Committee.
