Seven killed in accident at Berekum on New Year's Day

Berekum (B/A), Jan. 4, GNA - Seven persons were killed, three on the sport and the other four later on admission at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital when a Toyota bus and a Taxi cab involved in a motor accident on the Berekum-Dormaa-Ahenkro Highway on New Year's Day. The victims of first three on the spot deaths, which occurred at about 19.30 hours near the Berekum Goil Filling Station were identified as Alex Sarfo Burger, Kwaku Boakye, both from Amomaso, a farming community near Berekum and Gladys Nana Obeng from Kumasi in Ashanti.

The other four who died at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital were identified as Alice Yeboah, also from Amomaso, Moro, from Berekum, Mohammadu Kramo and Saala, a student of Star Business College at Berekum.

A source at the Accident Unit of the Berekum Police Station told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that one Mr. Mandela drove the Toyota bus with registration number GT 9467 N while Mr. Michael Gyan was in charge of the Taxi Cab with registration number GT 7141.

According to the source, the Toyota bus was carrying passengers from Berekum to Amomaso and ran into the taxi-cab, which had just bought some petrol from the Goil Filling Station and was re-joining the main road killing the three instantly.

The taxi driver Michael Gyan, Miss Lydia Ansuwaa, Miss Afia Amponsa and her two-year-old baby-girl Rebecca Yeboa who are still on admission at the local Holy Family Hospital were responding to treatment, the source added.

The Berekum Police is investigating the accident.
