Farmer in Police grips for causing the murder of wife

Bawku (U/E), Dec. 30, GNA- A 45-five year-old farmer from Kpikpira near Garu in the Upper East Region has been placed in police custody at Bawku for allegedly killing his 38-year old wife who failed to prepare him supper.

Kusal Konvent is said to have hit the back of his wife's head with a club during a heated debate, resulting in her death. Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) of the incident in Bawku on Thursday, Chief Superintendent of police Daniel Sampana Sapak, Municipal Police Commander, said the couple had been married for 12 years with four children, and that the wife, Madam Alima Tambo, was seven months pregnant at the time of her death.

The Police Commander said on December 19, 2004, Madam Alima attended a neighbour's funeral without seeking the husband's consent. "Towards the evening, Konvent returned home for his supper but found that his wife was not at home."

He added that as Konvent was enquiring about the whereabouts of their mother from one of his children, Alima appeared and there was a confrontation between the two. "No amount of explanation from the woman could calm down her husband," the Police Commander added.

Chief Superintendent Sapak said when Alima tried to escape, the husband hit her at the back of the head and fell unconscious. Some neighbours rushed her to the Garu Health Centre but she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Chief Superintendent Sapak said one of the suspect's brothers, Sampson Konvent, escorted him to the Bawku police station where he was arrested and placed in custody.

Dr. Francis Asaana of the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital performed autopsy on the deceased and her seven-month-old foetus, after which the bodies were released to the bereaved family for burial. The police are investigating the incident.
