Accra, Dec. 29, GNA - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Wednesday asked all hawkers to quit all major streets of Accra by January 1, to avoid prosecution.

All beggars and lunatics would also be removed from the streets. It said with effect from January 1, the assembly would embark on an exercise to remove beggars, hawkers, and lunatics from all traffic lights on the major streets of Accra.

A statement signed by Mr. N. Arcton-Tettey, Public Relations Officer of AMA said hawkers, beggars and lunatics found on the streets after December 31, 2004 would be arrested.

The statement reminded the public that, under the assembly's byelaws, it was an offence to beg, hawk or loiter in or along the major streets in Accra, particularly at road intersections where there were traffic lights.
