Kufuor won 14% of votes in Volta Region

Ho, Dec 23, GNA- President John Agyekum Kufuor won 100,777 votes in the Volta Region in the 2004 elections, representing about 14 per cent of the certified votes from the region.

In the 2000 Presidential elections, he polled 49,768 rpt 49,768 or (8.3) percent of certified votes from the region in a field of six candidates during the first round and 76,839 rpt 76,839 or (11) percent of the region's total certified votes in the run-off with Prof John Evans Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Data made available to the GNA by the Volta Regional Directorate of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) indicated that Prof Mills garnered 587,684, (81.3) per cent of the region's certified votes in the 2004 Presidential elections.

In the run-off in 2000 Prof Mills polled 589,719 votes, representing 87 per cent of the certified votes.

He polled 505,614 votes, which is 84.3 per cent of the votes cast in the first round in 2000.

In the 2004 Parliamentary Election, the NPP got its highest percentage votes of 37.1 in the region that is 7,860 votes from the Nkwanta-North Constituency where a teacher, Mr Joseph Nayan, became the first NPP parliamentary candidate to win a seat for the party in the region since the inception of the fourth republic in 1992.

The NDC's Prof. Mills however won the Presidential race from that constituency.

The Akan constituency won the second highest parliamentary votes in the region for the party in percentage terms of 31.4 per cent, which amounted to 7,902 certified votes.

President Kufuor got low votes in the Anlo, Keta and the newly created Adaklu-Anyigbe constituencies, polling 1,083, 1,460 and 1,880 votes respectively.

He also recorded quite low figures in the South, Central and North Tongu constituencies where he obtained 2,332, 2,224 and 2,019 votes respectively.

The significantly high votes for the NPP were in the South and North Nkwanta and the East and West Krachi constituencies, with the party polling the highest votes of 9,130 in Krachi-West.

Nkwanta-South and Keta constituencies recorded the highest turnout of 93 per cent each while North-Dayi constituency recorded the lowest turnout of 79 per cent.

Aggregate turnout for the 22 constituencies in the region was 88 per cent.
