22.12.2004 LISTEN

Accra, Dec.22, GNA- President John Agyekum Kufuor on Wednesday asked Ghanaians to use the Christmas season of peace, love and goodwill to regroup and rededicate themselves to the ideals that Jesus Christ stood for. He said with such rededication, Ghanaians would be well prepared for the continued development of the country. President Kufuor made the call in a Christmas Message to Ghanaians, and issued by the Office of the President, Castle, Osu in Accra. Mr Kwabena Agyepong, Press Secretary to the President signed the message. It said: "We are one people and one Nation. To this end, let us use the Christmas season of peace, love and goodwill to regroup and rededicate ourselves to the ideals that Christ stood for, in order to prepare us for the continued development of our dear country, Ghana". "Once again the Christmas and the New Year season is here with us. This year the spirit of the season and its message of peace, love and goodwill are appropriate for us Ghanaians having just concluded a vigorously contested Presidential and Parliamentary election", it said. The message said: " The successful conduct of the election has confirmed the nation's commitment to multi-party democracy underpinned by the rule of law. The electorate have exercised their franchise in an election that has been described as generally the most peaceful, free and fair in the country's history so far".
"As we celebrate the positive outcomes of the election, we have to recognise the challenges that confront us as a nation. This Christmas should offer the whole nation-all political parties, ethnic and religious groups, professional associations, the media and civil society organisations, an opportunity to overcome some of the negative ramifications of the electioneering campaign", it said.
The message said " In the Yuletide spirit of peace and love, unity and brotherhood, I wish every single Ghanaian and our numerous friends resident in the country, a Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year".
