Election of Presiding Member ends in deadlock

Twifo Praso (C/R) Dec.22 GNA - The election of a Presiding Member for Twifo-Praso-Lower Denkyira District Assembly held at Praso on Tuesday ended in a deadlock when the two contestants failed to secure two thirds of fifty-five votes cast.

The deadlock followed a second round voting, which produced the same results of 31 votes for Rev. Ababio Danquah and 24 for Mr. Emmanuel Agyeman.

Rev. Ben Donkor the Presiding Member, now the Member of Parliament elect for Heman-Lower Denkyira adjourned the elections to a date to be announced later.

In a welcoming address, Rev. Donkor congratulated President J.A Kufuor on his re-election and the flag bearers of the various political parties for accepting the results of the elections in good faith. He also thanked members of the House for their co-operation and all others who contributed in divers ways to make his tenure of office a success.

Rev. Donkor suggested that the post of Presiding Member should be made fulltime and the tenure of office extended from two years to four. Mr. Abraham Odoom the District Chief Executive advised members to ensure that they elect a presiding member during the next sitting. The Assembly discussed a number of issues including the district education endowment fund, upgrading of Twifo Praso Health Centre into a full-fledged hospital, construction of a new market and the Assembly's bye-laws.
