Quality teaching and learning environment is important - Dr Amakye

Enchi (W/R), April 18, GNA - Dr Michael Amakye, the Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, has said the sustenance of quality teaching and learning was fundamental to the development of the country.

He said quality was at the heart of education and what takes place in classrooms and other learning environments was important to the future well-being of children, young people and adults adding, 'Quality teaching is one that satisfies basic learning needs and enriches the lives of learners and their overall experience of receiving education'.

Dr Amakye was speaking at the seventh graduation ceremony of the Enchi College of Education in the Western Region.

The graduation ceremony themed; 'Sustaining Quality Teaching in basic schools in Ghana; the Role of the newly Trained Teacher', sought to heighten interest in school outcomes and improving the education environment.

He said many countries have identified improved education through quality teaching and learning as one of the highest national priorities necessitating an evolution of teaching strategies.

Dr Amakye said effectiveness in teaching, the ability to adjust to the changing needs of the students in a world of rapid social, cultural, economic and technological change placed new demands on teachers.

'As newly trained teachers, you need to reflect on your personal learning needs in your specific setting and take responsibility for your personal lifelong learning. You are expected to teach a wider variety of skills than ever before, integrate these skills across the curriculum and meet the individual needs of exceptional students.'

Ms Victoria Aidoo, Principal of the College, said some challenges included encroachment of college lands, deplorable roads on campus, poor electrical installation on the buildings and vehicles for school attachment supervision.

She appealed to government, cooperate bodies and individuals to come to the aid of the school.

Ms Aidoo said the College has chalked some accomplishments with respect to teaching and learning, faculty development and outreach for teacher development.
