Atebubu Youth Chase Out Sunyani Queen Mother

The queen mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Nana Yaa Nyamaa, together with some Regional Peace Council members, who were sent to the Atebubu Amanten Traditional Council to plead on behalf of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Sanja Nanja, was rejected, according to information reaching DAILY GUIDE.

The MP purportedly called the Atebubu queen mother, Nana Afia Donyinaa II, a drunkard.

However, sources from the Regional Peace Council said the youth of Atebubu and some women groups in the town had wanted to prevent the Sunyani queen mother from entering the Atebubu Omanhene's palace. The emissary was unable to meet with Nana Afia Donyinaa to render the apology on behalf of the MP, who allegedly incited his tribesmen against the queen mother after calling her a drunkard.

According to the Atebubu youth, the Sunyani queen mother had not visited Nana Afia Donyinaa for years and so they were surprised to see her in the Omanhene's palace with the mission of coming to beg for the “disrespectful MP.  No way!” they charged.

Sanja Nanja reportedly accused the queen mother of having been given akpeteshie (local liquor) hence, her misbehaviour during the recent brouhaha regarding the removal of the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Sampson Owusu Boateng.

The youth insisted that the visit was not meant to meet with Nana Afia Donyinaa but to have discussions with the Atebubu Traditional Council, particularly the Omanhene, Nana Owusu Achew Brempong, over a party issue which was gradually degenerating into ethnic agitation.

The meeting, which was held behind closed doors between Nana Yaa Nyamaa and the Omanhene, was not conclusive because the chief was said not to have given any concrete reply to the queen mother but promised to confer with his traditional council members because the decision to ban the MP from entering the palace was not taken by him alone but it was the council's decision.

According to a source, the message delivered by the queen mother    was meant to plead with the Atebubu Traditional Council to withdraw a press statement banning the MP from coming near the council due to his unruly behaviour on air.

It said the Omanhene was made to understand that peace was necessary for development in the area and that the ban would not auger well for peace; and for that matter, the youth should be prevailed upon to stop their violent behaviour.

The Sunyani queen mother later met with Mr Sanja Nanja, who rendered unqualified apology to the Atebubu queen mother and said it was not his intention to insult her.
