Cape Coast, Feb.25, GNA - Ghana National College emerged as winner of this year's Central Region inter-schools Constitution quiz competition organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Cape Coast.

They beat eight other schools, Winneba School of Business, Aggrey Memorial Zion, Adisadel College, St. Augustine's College, Mfantsipim School, Mozano Senior High School, Adankwaman SHS and Swedru School of Business in a keenly contested event held on Wednesday.

By this feat, the School would be representing the Region at the national 'Constitution Quiz' competition later this year.

As winners, Ghana National College took away a desk top computer, 'T' Shirts, certificates and copies of the 1992 Constitution while all the contesting schools received, 'T' Shirts and copies of the 1992 Constitution

The Constitution Quiz Contest, a portfolio based on testing the understanding of students at the Senior High Schools (SHS) level on Ghana's constitution was introduced in 2002 by the NCCE.

The initiative was to inculcate the message of the Constitution into the youth to be patriotic and responsible and to help build effective citizenship to enable them participate in local and national governance.

Mr. Johnson Opoku, Director of Programmes at NCCE, asserted that the Constitution contest for the past years has deepened SHS students' understanding of the Constitution and this would help them to be responsible citizens.

He expressed the hope that such competitions would enable the youth to understand the Constitution of the country and cherish and uphold it.

Mr. Nicolas Ofori Boateng, Regional Director of NCCE, explained that the programme was designed to assist SHS Students to understand and appreciate the Constitution such that they grow with it to be effective leaders in the future.

He expressed satisfaction about the achievements of the programme and admonished the students to inculcate the civic values learnt and they should apply them to ensure that they became responsible citizens in the society.

Mr. Tito Kojo Voegborlo, the Commission Secretary, reminded the youth of the roles they were expected to play to ensure a peaceful elections and charged them to live up to it.

Some of the participants who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) expressed gratitude to the NCCE for the initiative and enumerated how the contest has been beneficial to them and their colleagues.

They appealed to the Electoral Commission, political parties and all stakeholders to do all that they could to ensure that this year's general elections were peaceful.
