The Presidential Candidate of the PNC, Dr Edward Mahama, has stated that 40 percent of Ghana's debt before President Kufuor assumed office was misapplied, misappropriated or embezzled.

He said the NPP administration, therefore, made a mistake by declaring the country (HIPC) for debts which were not used for the benefit of the people.

Addressing members of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala campus branch of the Tertiary Institutions Functionaries of the PNC as part of his campaign tour of the Northern Region on Monday, Dr Mahama also said what the government should have done when it took office was to have negotiated for a total debt cancellation, instead of adopting the HIPC initiative.

He noted that Ghana did not need any foreign expert to solve its problems, since the country had experts in the various fields who should be encouraged to work to save the country from the payment of huge sums of money to foreign consultants.

Dr Mahama asked the students to vote for politicians who had the solution to the country's hydra-headed problems, instead of those who had adopted the divide-and-rule tactics.
