Nsawam (E/R), Nov. 12 GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Friday commended Chiefs for being truthful and appreciating the efforts of the Government in improving the socio-economic conditions in their areas. He said the encouragement and recommendations made by the chiefs during his regional tours for the positive change in the lives of their people were honest comments and did not mean that they were indulging in partisan politics.
"The Chiefs have been truthful and frank with the improvement in their road network, provision of potable water, health and educational facilities since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed power in 2001." President Kufuor was addressing a durbar of Chiefs and people of the Akwapim South District in Nsawam on the first day of his two-day tour of the Eastern Region.
He said the Constitution debarred Chiefs from indulging in partisan politics but "because of the love they have for the country they are speaking the truth on the development in their areas"
President Kufuor said every Chief worthy of his status wanted development, peace and stability in his or her area of jurisdiction, adding that NPP Government was providing all these.
He called for unity and cooperation among the members and supporters of the NPP to a resounding victory in Election 2004. He said with the rehabilitation of the Accra- Kumasi Highway and other road networks the District would be opened up for more investment. President Kufuor asked the Party members and supporters not to indulge in any act of confrontation with members of other political parties but should be vigilant on polling day to ensure massive victory for NPP.
Nana Gyan Kwasi II, Aburihene, commended the Government for the numerous development projects including clinic to serve Kofisam, Pokrom and Adoagyiri Zongo as well as rural electrification and industrial craft centre at Aburi.
Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr Hackman Owusu Agyemang Minister of the Interior, Mr Felix Owusu Agyapong, the Majority Leader in Parliament and Mr Kwamena Bartels, Minister of Private Sector Development are accompanying President Kufuor.
