Aflao, Nov. 12, GNA - Professor John Atta Mills, Presidential Candidate of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Thursday asked the people of the Volta Region not to retain the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Election 2004, to avoid the misery, poverty and deprivation the Government had imposed on them.
He said the widespread corruption among public officials indicated that Ghana would be totally run down under a second term of the NPP. Prof. Mills was addressing political rallies at Aflao; Sogakope; Adidome; Akatsi; Keta; Anloga; Dabala, Dzodze and Ho Central during the third leg of his four-day campaign tour of the Region.
"Corruption is high in Government, there is misery and poverty among the people and the so called positive change' has turned into negative change."
The NDC Presidential Candidate called on the electorate to vote back the NDC to power to continue with the development of the country. "I assure the people of the Volta Region that their friendship with my course will not be taken for granted," he said.
Prof Mills asked the supporters of the Party to remain calm when they were harassed or provoked by their political opponents. He introduced Mr Albert Zigah, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Aflao to the people.
Mr Modestus Ahiable, Ketu North Member of Parliament who is also the Regional Chairman of the NDC, said it was not true that the Party did not develop the Region.
He said the Rawlings Administration provided medical facilities, schools, potable water and extended power from the National Electricity Grid to many communities.
Mr Dan Agbodakpi, MP for Keta, said the NPP had failed to destroy the NDC through the harassment and imprisonment of its functionaries.
