EX 64 BATTALION MEN INVOLVED IN “COUP”

07.11.2004 LISTEN
By Kwasi Boafo Assuman, Happy FM

Investigations by Happy fm have indicated that some of the seven persons arrested by the security agencies include former officers of the 64 battalion who worked at the Osu Castle as guards when former President Rawlings was in power. The others, who are serving officers of the Ghana Armed Forces, are believed to be from the Recce Regiment. Our sources within the security agencies say the men were picked up early yesterday morning for questioning after initial intelligence indicated that the suspects were acting suspiciously. The former 64 officers were retired when the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) came to power in 2001. Yesterday the Security Agencies confirmed that some persons are being questioned in connection with conspiracy to subvert the democratic government and perpetuate certain terrorist actions. A release from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police, signed and issued by its Director, David Asante-Apeatu, said appropriate legal advice is to be sought when necessary to determine the appearance of these persons before the Court of Law. When reached on phone for the reaction of Former Rawlings President to the arrest, his personal aide, Victor Smith confirmed that some of those arrested served at the castle when Mr. Rawlings was in power. But said they are not known to the ex- President personally. He rather accused the government of faking the coup to win public sympathy ahead of next month's elections.
