The member of parliament for the Suhum constituency in the Eastern Region Hon. Frederick Opare-Ansah on Friday 25th December, 2015 and Saturday 26th December, 2015 supported a series of football gala’s in Akorabo and Obuotumpan both suburbs of Suhum respectively.

The football gala organized in Akorabo was part of the official programs to mark the 3rd Anniversary of the Noyam Festival celebrated by the people of Akorabo.

Although he was not officially slated to attend the festival until the main grand durbar which was to be held on 26th December, 2015, he paid them a surprise visit to support the football gala. He didn’t go empty handed either, as his arrival signaled a turning point in the event because of the items he carried along to support the program.

He went along with items totaling over GHC4,000 which included a set of football jerseys to be presented to the winners, a trophy, brand new footballs, fireworks as well as cash prices ranging from 250 Ghana cedis to 50 cedis for the various participating teams.

The former assembly man for the community Seth Youngson heaped praise on the MP and thanked him for the surprise package as it was never planned for such expensive items to be presented to the participating teams or the eventual winner because of monetary constraints. The four top teams each received a football and a cash price. Children who were also by standers were not left out as toffees were shared for all the children present to give them joy even as they celebrate the NOYAM festival and Christmas.

Amidst cheers and jubilation from the crowd, Hon Opare-Ansah, charged the crowd to be cautious even as they celebrated the Noyam festival and Christmas. He remarked that, being someone who loves sports and football, when he heard of the event, he couldn’t help but make an appearance at the event and thus decided to go along with the items to support them.

The football gala organized at Obuotumpan on the other hand was organized by the youth wing of the party in the community. The purpose was to foster unity and peaceful coexistence among members of the community and people from other communities in the Suhum municipality.

Six teams participated in the event and they were drawn from several communities in the area. There was also a visiting team from Koforidua known as Eastern FC. He presented items worth GHC 5,000. All the participating teams received a football and cash prizes. The eventual winners of the gala also received a brand new trophy, a set of football jerseys and a cash price.

Children in the community who came to witness the gala were also given toffees and biscuits in lieu of the times. Fireworks were used to lighten up the event and the MP called on all present to vote massively for the NPP and Nana Akufo Addo in the 2016 elections so that the hardship that has been inflicted on Ghanaians due to the bad leadership of the NDC can be alleviated.

He also cautioned them to exercise restraint in 2016 especially during the election. He remarked that it was not worth it dying or getting injured because of elections, since those who will win the 2016 election will win irrespective and those who will lose will also lose irrespective. That is, although he asked them to work tirelessly to ensure Nana Akufo Addo and the NPP come to power, he pleaded with them not to engage in any acts of violence because of the elections. He expressed optimism that the NPP will come to power in 2016 because of the good policies the party has in place as well as the monumental failure of the NDC government. He asked them to reflect on their lives under NDC for the past seven years and take the right decision to vote the NDC out.

He promised to make the football gala in Obuotunpan an annual event and pledged to support them in what ever they needed when they called on him. He also promised to return in early 2016 so that they can talk about development issues facing the community.
