General News Bus branding saga: AG not likely to retrieve GHc1.9m from Smartty's - MP
DEC 25, 2015 LISTEN

Member of the Public Accounts Committee, Adwoa Osei Asare has cast doubt over the ability of the Attorney General to retrieve GHc1.9 million excess money paid to Smartty management, the company that branded the 116 buses.

The Chief of Staff directed the Attorney General to retrieve the money after investigations into the issue which has cost the job of Transport Minister, Dzifa Ativor.

Abena Osei Asare, who is also the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East in the Eastern region told Joy News, a similar directive to the Attorney General to retrieve money paid to RLG and Zoomlion under GYEEDA informs her conviction the latest directive will not achieve much.

“Ghanaians are not impressed. See Woyome, Isofoton and all the others, all these recoveries were backed by law but ask yourself, has the AG been able to recover even one-tenth of the amount? No. This time, it is not even backed by anything legal so I have my doubt as to whether they can recover the money,” the MP said.

She warned that violations of the Public Procurement Act will continue until government starts to implement recommendations of the public accounts committee.

“If you go to other countries, they follow through with the recommendations. The problem here is enforcing the recommendations. PAC’s mandate ends when we submit the recommendations to parliament and the house adopts and then it goes to the executive. So it’s up to the executive to enforce this recommendations… if we should go ahead and enforce even half or 50% of the recommendations things will turn around,” Abena Osei Asare added.
