EC set for by-election in Amenfi West Constituency

Takoradi, Dec. 15, GNA - The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed its readiness to conduct a peaceful by-election in the Wassa Amenfi West constituency in the Western Region scheduled for today, Tuesday, December 1, 2015.

The Western Regional Director of the EC, Mr. Steven Opoku-Mensah, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday that the Commission was set to organize the poll.

He disclosed that a collation centre would be set at the District Assembly Hall at Assankragwa where all the results from the polling stations would be collated and the final results declared.

The by-election is being contested by four political parties including, the ruling National Democratic Congress being represented by Mr. Eric Afful, the candidate for the New Patriotic Party is Mr. Paul Dekyi, the Progressive People's Party had Mr. Abraham Kojo Boadi while the United Front Party put forward Mr. Elvis Essien as its parliamentary candidate.

Article 112 clause five of the 1992 Constitution states that, 'Whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament the Clerk of Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after the vacancy occurred and a by-election shall be held within thirty days after the vacancy occurred'.

In all, 62,000 voters are expected to vote to elect a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area after the sudden demise of the incumbent MP, Mr. John Gyetuah, on October 13, this year.
