Accra, Nov. 5, GNA - Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, has asked teachers to prevail on school children to use library facilities in the millennium schools.
The millennium schools were established by the government to end the shift system.
He also reminded parents of the important role that education plays in the nation's development, hence the need for them to encourage their children to cultivate the habit of reading to enhance their education.
Dr Vanderpuije said this when he inaugurated the 13th Millennium School at Pig Farm in the Ayawaso Central District in the Greater Accra Region, which forms part of efforts to make provision of 112 schools in the metropolis.
He advised the junior high school students in the area to set high standard of performance and moral conduct to help them in their studies, adding: 'You may go through difficult times but do persevere and you will do it.'
He asked the teachers to at least send their students to the library for one hour a day so that they could acquire skills in reading.
Mrs Tena Mensah, the Municipal Director of Education gave the assurance that the Ghana Education Service would continue to collaborate with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to upgrade basic schools infrastructure and called on parents not to shirk their responsibilities.
She appealed to the community to adopt an effective maintenance culture by ensuring that the buildings are protected from all forms of destruction particularly when the schools are on recess.
She said: 'To you teachers and children I am convinced that this building is going to open an opportunity for you to perform better to add your name to the prominent schools in the municipalities and also to glorify AMA for this wonderful gesture.'
'We of the Municipal Directorate of Education will keep in regular touch with the school authorities to guide them as to their contributions towards prolonging the life time of this building,' she said.
