“We Want To Come Home” - Ghanaians In Canada Tells Akufo Addo

A Ghanaian who was born in Jamaica as a result of the slave trade has indicated her intention to repatriate and settle for good in Ghana.

The lady who identified herself as Ms. Morrison asked the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party [NPP] Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo what he would do to facilitate her and other Ghanaians in the Diasporas’ wish for amnesty.

Other members of the Ghanaian community who wants to liberate or free themselves from certain restrictions that have made life very difficult for them in foreign destinations and want repatriate to Ghana also told Akufo Addo,”we want to come home”.

The occasion was a recent town hall meeting at the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church in Toronto which was organized by the NPP Canada Branch in collaboration with the NPP Toronto Chapter.

According to Ms. Morrison, she has been visiting Ghana ever since she discovered her ancestral root in Ghana in 2005.

She disclosed that together with some non-governmental agencies [NGO’s] they have been building libraries for schools as well as donating teaching and learning materials for various institutions in the country.

As a Ghanaian in a foreign destination lending her support to national development, she wanted to know what measures Nana Akufo Addo will be implement to attract Ghanaians such like her to return and support development at home.

Other participants at the meeting expressed their concern about high incidence of armed robbery in Ghana where the main target has been holiday makers, repatriates and successful business owners.

They complained bitterly about bribery and corruption at the country’s borders, failure by the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security for all.

Responding Nana Akufo Addo, expressed disappointment that the uniformed police men and women have turned themselves into party police officers instead of serving and protecting lives and property in the country.

He observed that Ghana is a country where everyone wants to live in.

The NPP presidential candidate hinted that under his government, the duties and policies of the police service would be clearly spelt out for them as well as supply them with the needed equipment to perform their duties diligently as expected of them.

He assured Ghanaians in Diasporas that his government will pursue measures that will attract most Ghanaians and even non-Ghanaians to come home and lend their support to national development.

Nana Akufo Addo said, such measures would be revising and granting the resident permit status to non-citizens who want to come home and support national development.

“We shall also look into the citizenship status as well and issue it to people who want to come home and settle, establish their business and contribute in diverse ways to keep the country moving forward” he assured.
