There was drama at the Jachie-Pramso Senior High School (JAPASS) in the Ashanti Region last Thursday as plain-clothes policemen and the Ashanti Regional Director of Education moved in to lock the headmaster out of his office.
The move caused total confusion, as the students did not know what was amiss when they were asked to assemble to be briefed by the Board of Governors of the school, something that seldom happens.
The confused students were seen murmuring and trying to fathom what the problem was.
The regional directorate of the education, together with the management of the school, decided to force the headmaster, Mr Paul Agyei Boakye, out of office with the explanation that he had reached the compulsory retirement age of 60, but had refused to go on retirement, arguing that he was not yet 60.
The headmaster was, however, not at post at the time of the visit and the board ordered a carpenter to replace all the locks to his office as a measure to force him out of office.
Board chairman
Briefing the media, Nana Nsuase Poku III, the Board Chairman, said Mr Boakye, who reached the retirement age on May 1, 2015, was written to by the Director-General of Ghana Education Service to proceed on retirement on May 2.
However, he said, Mr Boakye insisted that “so far as he was concerned, his date of birth was sometime in 1960 and as such had not yet reached the retirement age.”
According to him, this compelled the board to hold an emergency meeting in August, this year and they gave him up to September 7, 2015 to leave the school.
“But as of October 1, 2015, he was still at post and we have, therefore, decided to force him out of office. We are changing the locks to prevent him from accessing the place,” he said.
Acting headmaster
Nana Poku said the Regional Director of Education, Mrs Mary Owusu Akyaw, would act in his stead as stipulated by GES rules.
However, on humanitarian grounds, the board chairman said Mr Agyei Boakye would be given some period of grace to vacate his residence to pave the way for whoever would be sent to replace him.
Efforts by the Daily Graphic to contact Mr Agyei Boakye for his comments were unsuccessful.
