Sekondi, Oct. 13, GNA - The Western Regional Residency of Mr. Joseph B. Aidoo, the Regional Minister has no fire extinguishers. The building, which was constructed in the 1960s has seen no renovation and the electrical wiring are too old and could result in a fire outbreak.

Mr. Aidoo confirmed these after the launch of the Western Regional World Disaster Reduction Day at Sekondi on Wednesday.

The week-long celebration is on the theme: "Learning From Yesterday's Disasters For Tomorrow's Hazards."

Mr. Aidoo said the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had assessed the cost of providing fire extinguishers at the residency and submitted the cost, adding that efforts were at foot to provide the extinguishers to protect the residency.

He said though some disasters are natural and cannot be controlled, others could be averted.

"There are many who will ignore all warnings and laid down regulations and go all out to build in the middle of waterways and drainage systems," he added.

Mr. Aidoo said the celebration of the Day, should focus the attention of the country on the potentials of disaster and prepare for them.

He stressed that public education could help in reducing disasters and hazards and safeguard lives and property.

Mr. Padmore K. Nyekopa-Arthur, Regional National Disaster Management Co-ordinator said apart from radio talk shows, visits would be organised to some organisations to educate them on disasters as part of the week-long celebration.

He appealed to Ghanaians to prepare adequately for disasters and inform the appropriate organisations in case of any form of disaster. Mr. Philip K. Nkrumah, Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Chief Executive said several estate developers have adopted cunning methods to outwit building inspectors and city planners.

He cautioned that the assembly would not hesitate in demolition houses built in water-ways or along river banks.
