Press Release Coylib Condemns Police Brutality On Let My Vote Count Demonstrators
SEP 17, 2015 LISTEN

Coalition of Young Liberals (COYLIB) condemn such cowardice acts on LMVCA,AFAG and MFC demonstrators by the Ghana Police Service in the greatest possible terms and should not be condone in a country where democracy thrives.

Why will the Ghana Police Service, glad in full riot gear resorted to brute force by using tear gas canisters, batons and horse whips on peaceful demonstrators?

We are utterly appalled with the way and manner the Mahama –Amissah administration in alliance with the hired group of police officers will go to the extend of using excessive force on innocent citizens who were seeking a legitimate concern for a new voter register.

The conduct of the Ghana Police Service was totally unacceptable and it contravenes human rights law.

Human rights are universal, inalienable and indivisible, so President Mahama and his Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Alhassan cannot pick and choose which rights they want to honour.

The Police force cannot continue to violate this right using intimidation, ethnic profiling, mass arrest, illegal political repression and other means to thwart free speech.

A right to demonstrate, sit-ins, motionless protest, private meetings, press conferences, counter-demonstrations are critical to a functional and stable democracy.

The attack by the Police force on the peaceful demonstrators threatens the foundation of our democracy and undermines the Magna Carta charter.

We are in great disappointment, and there are no words to adequately describe the anger but the coward leadership exhibited by the Presidency will not move the men and women of the nation.

President Mahama has demonstrated enough reasons for us to believe that he was 'anti human right' by justifying the arrest of Citi fm chief executive,Mr Samuel Attah-Mensah in November 2014 in connection with a publication on its online platform about a Ghanaian Drug dealer Nayele Ametefeh, aka Ruby Adu-Gyamfi .

It is very frustrating to see men in uniform become thugs against innocent civilians seeking proper electoral reforms devoid of any cheating in any future elections.

Ghanaian lives matter, but the graphics of this criminal act by the Police leadership echoes the dangers the populace face as the country prepares for next year general elections.

We are immediately reminding the President and his Police appointees of their obligations to protect civilians under international human rights and the constitution of the state.

We demand national investigations by the Police Council and ensure those responsible for these crimes are held accountable.

COALITIONS OF YOUNG LIBERALS (COYLIB) is calling on the Foreign office, the Commonwealth Secretariat, European Union and United Nations to act quickly and direct any political regime that threatens the very foundation of Ghana’s democracy and its stability.

We also drawing the attention of Amnesty International to note the pockets of violence administered by the current Leadership for records; as any unforeseen circumstances in the next general election can be evidence in any law court for prosecution.

COYLIB advises the Mahama-Amissah administration and Ghana Police Service to be mindful of their draconian style and tactics on peaceful demonstrators.
