Sunyani, Sept 01, GNA - The Nkoranza North and South District Assembly Elections have been put on hold for security reasons.

Mr. George Gyabaa, Brong Ahafo Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani that intelligence report indicated that the two places were not safe for the elections.

There have been several demonstrations in the area following the closure of some Micro Finance Institutions specifically Diamond Micro finance (DKM) and God is Love Fun Club in the area.

The Regional EC Director stated that the people had planned to vandalise the electoral materials at the various electoral area on September 1, and base on Regional Security Council's (REGSEC's) advice the 'election has been put on hold until further notice'.

Mr Gyabaa said the two districts have 137 candidates at 55 electoral areas in which four out of the candidates are female.

He said the materials are already at the two areas but the election would not be held today, Tuesday September 1 in view of the unpalatable situation over there.

Meanwhile the Brong Ahafo Regional Police has stated its preparedness for the elections to be held at all the remaining electoral areas in the Region on the 'D-Day'

Superintendent Alhaji Maama Arhin, Regional Crime Officer, told the GNA that the security had adequate stand-by officers to be dispatched to the over 500 'flash points' in the Region.

He mentioned that 100 police officers have already been dispatched to the Nkoranza District to calm the situation.
