SEP 1, 2015 LISTEN

The Minority leader in parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reflect deeply on the importance of  compiling a new voters’ register as it conducts district level elections across the nation today..

The minority leader said that the fact that the old register is being used for today’s elections does not mean that a new register is not important for the 2016 general elections since the provision of a new register will certainly forestall any electoral dispute and chaos.

“I have been told by some experts that the compilation and preparation of a new register will not cost the nation more than GH¢500 million and already the EC has wasted about GH¢100 million on the botched district level since it started the process in December last year,” the minority leader noted..

According to the minority leader who was briefing a section of the parliamentary press on today’s election, the GH¢100million translated into $50 million at that time and now the value of that money is GH200 million all wasted by the EC

The minority leader also called for forensic audit to be conducted into the operations of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies since after the expiration of the term of the current assembly members in March, this year the assemblies continued to make expenses for the smooth running of the assemblies

“Parliament and the Auditor-General should ensure that no improprieties have been committed by the assemblies”.
