2 Cops Killed In Gory Accident
01.09.2015 LISTEN

Two police officers, one of them a woman, lost their lives in an accident on the Accra-Winneba road over the weekend.

The accident occurred when a number of policemen and women were on a return journey to Accra after attending a wedding ceremony of their colleague at Mankessim in the Central Region.

The vehicle, with registration number GP 3086, upon reaching a spot a few meters away from the Winneba junction, reportedly collided with a Toyota Camry registered CR 45-15, which was travelling from Accra to Cape Coast, when its driver purportedly lost control and veered into the lane of the police vehicle.

One ASP, two chief inspectors and 14 constables were on board the bus when the accident occurred.

One of the deceased passed out recently from the Police Training School, Tesano, Accra, and subsequently posted to a newly created unit.

Names and other details were not available yet by press time yesterday. The police administration, under such circumstances, must inform the families of the deceased before letting out the sad news to the public.

According to information, one cop died on the spot while the other died on arrival at the Winneba Government Hospital.

The bodies have been deposited at the hospital for autopsy.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the dead included the driver of the police vehicle and the female police officer.

An eyewitness, Kojo Quansah, hinted that about 16 police officers sustained various degrees of injury.

Mr Quansah added that six of the personnel whose conditions were critical were sent to the Police Hospital in Accra while three of them who were admitted at the Winneba Government Hospital were responding to treatment. Those who sustained minor degrees of injury were treated and discharged.

Efforts by DAILY GUIDE to speak to the Winneba Municipal Police Commander of the Motto Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, ASP John Paul Akonde, proved futile as his phone was off.

However, the driver of the Toyota Camry is currently on admission at the Winneba Trauma and Specialised Hospital.
