37 Hospital Improves Services To Patients

The 37 Military hospital is gradually becoming the destination of all those seeking medical care within the Accra metropolitan area and beyond.This is as a result of extensive rehabilitation and expansion works that had taken place there within the last two years.
From what was essentially a military medical centre, 37 Military Hospital has developed to become one of the biggest health establishments in the country, as a result of the massive investment of millions of dollars to turn it into what the Minister of Defence, Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor described as a “Centre of Excellence in health delivery” in the sub-region.
In a random interview at the hospital, some of the patients described the place as a one-stop hospital, which satisfied the needs of those who visited it. They contended that if the other hospitals, such as Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, could also be rehabilitated and brought to modern standards,it would go a long way to address the health needs of the country.
Attendance at the hospital, according to an official source, had doubled since it was renovated and upgraded. The source commended Dr Addo-Kufuor for the urgency with which he moved for work to be completed on the hospital. During the inauguration of the out-patient department of the hospital recently, President John Agyekum Kufuor described it as a “dream come true”,and said “we will always cherish the day in the annals of medical practice and national health delivery effort in the country”.
In 1941, the 37 Military Hospital was established by the British government to support her fighting troops in the Second World War.The role of the hospital then was to provide definitive and rehabilitative medical care for troops injured in that war.The design of physical structures and the level of equipment were just adequate to handle the volume and classification of patients the hospital was required to take care of at that time.
After the war and over the years, the role of the 37 Military Hospital drastically changed.Instead of attending to only serving military personnel and those retired from active service as the original planners had in mind, the hospital is now a vital component of the national health care effort.
The name, 37 Military Hospital only reflects the national institution responsible for its administration. The diversity of people who seek medical care at the hospital makes the name misleading.It is more of a national asset, which requires maximum government support and development.
Dr Addo Kufuor said the immeasurable role the hospital played made him to strive to get it expanded and rehabilitated before scheduled date to serve Ghanaians.The 37 Military Hospital, has so far had its projects initiated by Dr Addo-Kufuor completed to serve their purpose.
