Parliamentary candidate secures loans for women in constituency

By GNA

Kumasi, Sept 27, GNA - Mrs Elizabeth Agyemang, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Oforikrom in the Kumasi metropolis, has since the beginning of the year secured about 600 million cedis loans from the First Allied Savings Bank for 300 women in the constituency to enhance their businesses.

She said the loans formed part of her initiative to improve upon the economic condition of women in the constituency. Mrs Agyemang was addressing the electorate of the constituency when she took her turn at the "Meet Your Parliamentary Candidate" at Oforikrom on Saturday.

The programme, being organised by the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP), is to enable residents in the various constituencies in the metropolis to meet and interact with their parliamentary candidates for them to explain their manifestos and vision for the constituencies to them.

"Women empowerment would be a gimmick if individuals and corporate bodies do not team up to lift the average Ghanaian woman from poverty", she pointed out.

She said political parties needed to co-operate with one another in order to ensure a peaceful election, adding that even though the political landscape had been relatively peaceful during elections in previous years, recent utterances and behaviour of some politicians should be a source of concern to all.

Mrs Agyemang assured the people that when they give her the mandate in the December elections, she would constitute a Council of Elders which will comprise representatives from all the political parties to be charged with identifying peculiar women and children's problems in the constituency for solutions.
