The wine glass

The wine glass
05.08.2015 LISTEN

We are going to talk about what to do or what not to do at a party and how to hold a wine glass.

If you are invited to a party or an occasion and the occasion is a black tie event, it usually means you should put on a black tie but it doesn’t necessarily mean you should put on a black tie. What we mean is, you should put on a black tie but you can also decide to put on a gray tie, which is the only option really for a black tie event.

Also a suit jacket is usually required, not compulsory but it puts you in a class and makes people look at you like as a “serious” person. A common mistake that a lot of guys commit when they wear a suit jacket is with the buttons, now when in a jacket, while standing you should close the button, you can also leave it open if your jacket is too tight or you just want to, but when you are sitting; you should at all times keep the jacket open so that your hand movements are not restricted and also you don’t look rigid.

There are many ways of holding a wine glass, but before you can handle a wine glass you need to know the parts of the wine glass, there is the bowl, the stem and the foot/base.

If you know these parts then it should be easy for you to hold a wine glass. First of all you should never hold a wine glass by the bowl neither should the bowl sit in your palm, unfortunately that is what most of us know.

Unless the wine is too cold then your palm will warm it a little or to warm the wine you can just cover the bowl with your other palm. The proper way to hold a wine glass is by the stem, when holding a wine glass; you pinch the stem between your fingers and your thumb, either just beneath the bowl or just above the foot or at the middle of the stem. Preferably holding the glass at the stem just beneath the bowl, it gives more stability to the glass so that the glass doesn’t dangle and spill wine on people.
