Gyanagyanadze (C/R) Sept.19 GNA - The head of Water Section Department Overseas Corporation, The Hague in the Netherlands, Mr. Durk Adema on Friday visited the Winneba Water Works that the Dutch government in collaboration with the Ghana government constructed to solve water problem facing the people of Winneba and its surroundings. The Dutch government after the construction of the project in 2002 has again decided to assist in the distribution of the water to the people in the area and rehabilitate existing old pipelines to ensure free flow of water to all parts of the town.

Mr. Adema, accompanied by Mr. Mike Allan Hammah, Member of Parliament of Effutu and Mr. Crosby Asmah, Assembly Member for Effutu Rural were conducted round the Water Works, which included the treatment and Pumping Plants by the John Mensah, District Manager of the Ghana Water Company.

According to Mensah, the Company needed funds to replace Asbestos Cement (AC) pine-line laid over twenty years ago, which often got burst due to strong pleasure from the newly installed powerful pumping machines with AC pipes and also extend water to uncovered areas. He said that the station could supply about 3 million gallons of water a day but was presently supplying only 1.2 million gallons and would therefore be in the position to expand it supply nearby communities if funds are available.

Mr. Mensah took the team to Gyanagyanadze, Nsuekyir, Atekyedo, Gyahadze and Woarabeba, all nearby communities, where the people were facing acute water problems.

At Atekyedo, Gyanagyanadze and Woarabeba where new pipelines would have to be laid before water could reach them, the people told the team that they were forced to buy a bucket of water at 1000 cedis from private tankers.

According to them the bore-holes provide to them were salty and have even broken down and appealed to the government and Dutch government to connect them to the Winneba Water Supply which is about five kilometers from them.

They promised to provide communal labour anytime the project is ready to take off.
