PNC will not be party to plot to destabilise country

Accra, Sept. 6, GNA - The People's National Convention (PNC) on Monday said it would not support any plans to destabilise the country through mercenaries or any illegal means.

"We respect and abide by the decision of the Ghanaian people to change their governments only through legal and legitimate means and hence are committed to assisting in whatever way possible to ensure that the forthcoming general election come on in a free, fair and peaceful manner," it said.

The Party was commenting on recent Media reports that some Ghanaians were recruiting mercenaries in Liberia to destabilise the country.

The Party said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Mr Edward Nasigrie Mahama, Leader and Flag Bearer of the Party, that any reports concerning threats to national security and stability, no matter how whimsical, must be taken seriously and dealt with appropriately, firmly and expeditiously bearing in mind the antecedents in the history of the country.

The statement urged all political leaders to adhere to the laid down procedures in the code of conduct for political parties and avoid unnecessary inflammatory statements about their opponents in the run-up to the elections.

The statement said courtesies due political leaders, especially those entitled to them by reason of their former positions, be restored to them so that they could travel in and out of the country with the full knowledge of the authorities, in order that their protection and that of the country could be guaranteed.

The Party commended the Security Services for keeping the peace of the country so far and urged them to be vigilant to face the challenges of the forthcoming elections.

The PNC also commended the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Chairman, President John Kufuor; Executive Secretary of ECOWAS, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, current chairman of the Africa Union (AU) Chairman, President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria as well as UN Secretary - General Busumuru Kofi Annan for their efforts to bring lasting peace to West Africa.

The statement affirmed its confidence in the Electoral Commission to run a free and fair election.
